I took Radiant Child Yoga Program (RCYP) last Easter 2012. When first decided to take the class I had no expectation about the program . I know nothing about Yoga but one thing for sure I have a heart size of the whole world to work with children.
Bunda Lucy is the one introduced me to the program. I straight away said YES to the program simply because it sounds cute to teach Yoga for children. However, I was a bit worried with my size as all my references about yoga instructor are slim, tall, nice figure *fiuh*. I did a little bit of browsing here and there to know about the program and see on the website this 'huge' lady name FEZIA that later on I find out that she is the trainer. Wooohoooo, hahaha I remember saying to myself "see that no worry about your size as the trainer herself is bigger than you are". *sorry Fezia but you are an awesome yoga teacher*
The program was for 5 days total of +/- 50 hours. AND IT WAS SURPRISINGLY AMAZINGLY SOOO VERYYYY GOOOOOOODDDDD!!!...I am not only learning about YOGA I am also learning about LIFE and to feel good about myself, make peace with myself and feel blessed about my whole LIFE. Most of all I learn a lot about how to respect children and appreciate their abilities not their disabilities.
"Children are big souls in little bodies" Only those who understand the concept will respect, accept and trust children fully to be who they are.
Working with children IS a serious deal. To me those who work with children without passion to do so (be it: teacher, educator, parents, care taker or whatever) consider a CRIME. What you say to them, your behavior, your attitude will have great impact toward their development.
Children are super sensitive, full fledged people, with high potency antennae which record every vibration within their vicinity, completely and very deeply (yogi bhajan)
You see...50 hours learning how to be the instructor of yoga for kids somehow change a lot of my perspective toward almost everything. Especially my opinion about children with different abilities. I couldn't agree more to refer special needs children with * i repeat* "Children with Different Abilities".
One of the parent in the class saying: "Autism is not a disease! To me autism, adhd, add, etc are new genre of a human being. I believe God must have a purpose to send these special children down from heaven. It is our job to help these children finding their purpose". That saying really WOW me! and change me!
Amazing huh...miss the class already.
At the end of the program to get our certificate we were all given an assignment to do which is: TEACH A YOGA PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN with minimum 2 children and write down a reflection of the class. All these years I fear *assignment, homework, projects or whatever you call it hahaha BUT amazingly this assignment excite me big time!
Soooo today after self struggling whether i am ready or not to teach children a Yoga I actually DID it! yeeeeaaaaaaa!!!...at Kupu-kupu day care (THANKS SO MUCH FOR GIVING ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE THERE WITH YOUR AMAZING LITTLE RUNNERS HAHA) with 4 beautiful children age 1.5 - 3 years old. YES! they are toddlers haha...
I did my lesson plan perfectly. I even wrote down everything I wanna do and say. I practice and practice (well not that hard though hihi). I listen to the CD all the time (this one is literally all the time haha as i love most of the song in the CD).
So let me share what happened...haha:
1. Introduction went GREAT :D
2. Tune in: everyone stay quitely on the mat follow what i did saying OOOOO AAAAA UUUUUUU EEEEEEE AAAAAA OOOOOOOO the other word of saying: ong namo guru dev namo
3. We chose journey to the zoo.
WARMING UP
Pretending today everyone get ready to the zoo started from the time they woke up. Everyone slept on the mat (fiuhhh) woke up by the sound of AYAM "kukuruyukkkk" (still there and follow me) taking bath, get clothes on did the stretching (everyone still with me)
YOGA EXCERCISE
We took bicycle to the zoo (everyone still following oups no the boy was loosing interest and decided to play by himself, wokeyyy haha) and they want to see BIRDS since I forgot how to do birds pose (wahahaha) I somehow manage to get everyone see SNAKE (snake pose the 3 children still following) and then they want to see DINOSAUR (switch on the CD of dinosaur walk and yeaaaa we had fund walking as dinosaur). At this stage I lost another child (huuuuuuu hik hik) but i continue the class. I switch the animal poses to FLOWER POSES it was a group pose (yeaaaaa i got them back, the boy came back and join the circle) then do the BUTTERFLY song (I lost the boy and the girl as they are more interested to play with real bicycle haha) oke so everybody tired and let's go home! They chose to ride a BUS instead of bicycle (wowowowoww i just thought now this is logically incorrect haha what happened to the bicycle we took to the zoo? we left it there? huahahaha) so they decided to sit as if they were in the bus (YES! i got them back again). On the way home one of the children want to stop by at Mc Donald to buy ice cream then I decided why dont we make ice cream and do the shaky shaky milk shake pose *hahahaha* when doing this I got everyone attention back and we had so much fun mixing all fruits, candies, cookies, chocolate to make yummy ice cream and shaking it together.
COOLING DOWN
Then we reach home and change clothes put them in the washing machine and dryer we did the shoulder work :D and went to sleep
MEDITATION
I manage to get everyone lay down on their mat for 10 seconds before we sing the good bye song together.
END
YEAAAAA wasn't it FUN :D
I am officially addicted to teach YOGA for children BUT I must do my routine YOGA session to able to transfer the real message about what YOGA is all about to the children so they will feel good and happy about themselves and their life *the connection of body, soul and mind*
I'll share more stories about my experience teaching Yoga for children as I do more of it.
*Sat Nam*
